Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has flagged off the reconstruction of the 25-kilometre Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, a major transport artery that has suffered years of deterioration, describing the project as a “long-overdue intervention critical to the economic and social vitality of the region.”

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Umuahia yesterday, Governor Otti said the decision to undertake the project — despite it being a federal highway — reflects his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of Abia residents above bureaucratic boundaries.

“Although this is a federal road, we proactively secured the necessary approvals to reconstruct it because we believe that infrastructure serving our people should never be hindered by jurisdictional limits,” he said.

The Governor explained that the road, which links Abia State with Akwa Ibom and other parts of the South-South, has posed severe challenges to motorists and residents for decades. He noted that its reconstruction would significantly ease the movement of goods and services, promote regional trade, and enhance economic opportunities for communities along the route.

Governor Otti announced that the reconstruction will be executed by GELD Construction Limited and completed within 18 months. The upgraded road, he said, will feature modern infrastructure, including solar-powered streetlights, improved drainage, and enhanced safety features.

“With this reconstruction now underway, we are turning the page on years of neglect. This project will not only improve travel experience but also boost security and night-time commerce along this critical route,” the Governor added.

He urged residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the timely completion of the project, assuring that his administration will maintain strict supervision to guarantee high-quality delivery.

Later in the day, Governor Otti also performed the groundbreaking for the 13.5-kilometre Ariam Usaka Ring Road in Ikwuano Local Government Area — another strategic infrastructure project aimed at connecting agricultural belts and stimulating local enterprise.

Describing the road as “a strategic connector,” the Governor explained that the project aligns with his broader infrastructure expansion blueprint, which includes planned developments across Oboro, Ibere, Oloko, Ariam, and other surrounding communities in Ikwuano.

“The Ariam Usaka project is particularly close to my heart because of its potential to unlock prosperity for our people. It will open up farmlands, ease movement, and stimulate economic activities,” Otti said.

Like the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene project, the Ariam Usaka Ring Road will also be handled by GELD Construction Ltd and is expected to be completed within 12 months. The Governor assured that the project will receive the same level of monitoring, transparency, and accountability that have become the hallmarks of his administration’s public works.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Federal Government for their cooperation and approvals that made the reconstruction of the federal road possible. He also commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, FNSE, for his support, and appreciated the Abia State Ministry of Works team led by Engr. Don Otumchere Oti for their professionalism and dedication.

“I sincerely thank President Bola Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for their support. This collaboration between the state and federal governments shows what is possible when the focus remains on service to the people,” he said.

The Governor paid glowing tribute to the people of Ikwuano and the entire Abia populace for their resilience and continued support. He acknowledged their patience through years of infrastructural decay and reaffirmed his resolve to justify their trust with tangible progress.

“To the resilient people of Abia, especially our brothers and sisters in Ikwuano, your steadfast support since 2015 has made these milestones possible. Together, we are ending decades of neglect and building a more prosperous Abia,” Otti said.

He also cautioned against misinformation, urging citizens to stay vigilant and focused on the collective vision of rebuilding Abia State.

“Let no one deceive you. We are on course. Our focus is clear — to restore dignity, rebuild infrastructure, and renew faith in governance. This is just the beginning; more transformative projects are on the way,” the Governor affirmed.

The flag-off of these two projects underscores Governor Otti’s broader infrastructural development strategy aimed at revamping long-abandoned roads, revitalising economic corridors, and improving access to rural communities.

Since assuming office, the Otti administration has embarked on aggressive road rehabilitation across the state, with particular attention to roads that connect industrial and agricultural hubs. The goal, according to government sources, is to make Abia the most accessible and investment-friendly state in the Southeast.

The reconstruction of the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, observers note, holds immense significance — not only as a gateway to Akwa Ibom and Cross River but also as a major trade link between the Southeast and South-South regions. Its neglect had long hindered transportation, leading to frequent accidents, high vehicle maintenance costs, and reduced economic activity in border communities.

With the reconstruction now underway, traders, commuters, and transporters are optimistic that the new road will transform mobility and business flow in the region. Similarly, the Ariam Usaka Ring Road is expected to provide critical access to farmlands, enabling local farmers to transport produce easily to markets within and outside the state.

Both projects reflect the Otti administration’s practical approach to governance — one that prioritises people-oriented projects, intergovernmental collaboration, and private sector competence.

Residents who attended the events expressed joy and relief at the commencement of the projects. Community leaders in Ikwuano described the road flag-off as “a dream come true,” while transport operators in Umuahia hailed the Governor’s courage to take over a federal project that had been abandoned for decades.

For many, the reconstruction symbolizes a new era of purposeful leadership. “We have waited for this road for more than 20 years,” said a trader in Umuahia. “We thank Governor Otti for taking the bold step to fix what others ignored.”

As Abia moves into another phase of infrastructural renewal, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s readiness to deliver quality, transparent, and sustainable development projects that will stand the test of time.

“Our mission is simple — to rebuild Abia with integrity, accountability, and excellence. These roads are just the beginning. From Umuahia to Aba, from Ikwuano to Ohafia, we are working to make our state a model of modern governance and responsible leadership,” the Governor said.

With shovels breaking ground and bulldozers roaring into motion, a new chapter opens for Abia State — one where neglected highways are reborn, rural communities are reconnected, and faith in government is gradually restored.

“Together,” Governor Otti concluded, “we are building the Abia of our dreams — one project, one community, and one promise at a time.”
