Michael Bush, the Labour Party’s flagbearer for Akwa Ibom State’s 2027 governorship race, says his government will be defined by one non-negotiable principle: citizens will not be silenced.

In a statement released Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the governorship hopeful accused Akwa Ibom State government elements whom he described as “outgoing power holders” of trying to gag dissent, and vowed that Labour will stand with anyone facing pressure to keep quiet — including Princess God’sown Udoito and Barr. Ewa Okpo.

“Intimidation always fails,” Bush declared adding that “Labour Party, Akwa Ibom State aligns totally with Akwaibomights at moments like now against oppression, against intimidation and against all such forms of shameless display of brute force.”

‘The People Must Speak Freely’

Bush said Labour’s position is not selective. Whether it involves high-profile figures or ordinary residents, the party, he said, “sides completely with the people now and always.”

He further described recent moves to suppress criticism as a “very unAkwaibomly new tendency of trying to muscle drop dissent,” arguing that such methods clash with Akwa Ibom’s tradition of open debate and communal accountability.

“Perpetrators who, no matter their trademark attempts at euphemising nonsense, are at best fading outgoing power holders, must realise that this stratagem never wins,” he warned.

In one of the statement’s most quoted lines, Bush drew a direct comparison to repressive regimes: “Our people MUST be allowed to live and speak freely because Akwa Ibom is not a state in North Korea.”

Turning the Mirror on Himself

The Labour candidate also used the moment to highlight his own approach to political attacks. He said he has refused to hit back at those he called “paid hirelings of the establishment” who spread falsehoods about him.

“If on an individual level, I have continued and shall continue to allow even paid hirelings of the establishment to get away with any and every lie they spew against me, why is it so difficult for their paymasters and own collaborators to allow our people to speak truth to power in peace?” he queried.

For Bush, the question is not just personal but political. He framed tolerance for criticism as a test of leadership.

‘No Intimidation, No Suppression’: Labour’s 2027 Pledge

Looking ahead to 2027-2031, Bush said a Labour administration would institutionalize that tolerance.

“Exactly what Labour Party promises from 2027 to 2031: no intimidation, no suppression,” he stated.

“It positions Labour as a shelter for citizens who feel targeted or marginalized by the current power structure,” one Uyo-based observer noted.

A Contrast With Incumbent Power

The statement also sharpened Labour’s contrast with the ruling establishment. By labeling opponents “fading outgoing power holders,” Bush is casting the 2027 election as a choice between fear and freedom.

Civil society groups in Uyo and Eket have recently warned about shrinking civic space in the state ahead of elections.

What It Means for 2027

With months to the polls, Bush is already drawing an early line in the sand. His campaign is framing civil liberties as a ballot issue, telling Akwa Ibom voters that a vote for Labour is a vote against political intimidation.

Recall that Princess God’sown Udoito was arrested months ago, arraigned and remanded in prison custody on charges bordering on defamatory publications against Governor Umo Eno.

Yesterday, State Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Barr Ewa Okpo was also arrested in connection with his recent comments against influential elements in the ruling APC in Akwa Ibom State.
