The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has introduced a comprehensive health insurance scheme for service attendants across its retail outlets nationwide, marking a major step in the company’s drive to enhance worker welfare, strengthen customer service delivery, and promote a healthier workforce across its operations.

The new initiative, known as the Attendants’ Health Insurance Scheme, was officially launched in Abuja by NNPC Retail Limited in collaboration with NNPC Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO). The scheme aims to onboard more than 7,000 service attendants onto the NNPC HMO platform, ensuring that frontline staff in petrol stations have access to quality and reliable healthcare services.

Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the NNPC Mega Station in Abuja, the Executive Director of Retail Operations and Mobility, Baba‐Shettima Kukawa, who represented the Managing Director of NNPC Retail Ltd, described the initiative as a landmark achievement in NNPC’s ongoing reform of its business and workforce management practices.

Kukawa noted that service attendants remain the organisation’s “first line of engagement” with customers, and as such, their health, motivation, and wellbeing directly impact customer satisfaction and service delivery in an increasingly competitive retail environment.

“We have developed a comprehensive welfare structure known as the Attendant Framework, which focuses on improving the overall wellbeing of our service attendants,” he said. “As part of this initiative, we are proud to commence the rollout of HMO coverage beginning this month. Our long-term goal is to elevate service delivery across all our stations such that every customer interaction reflects care, professionalism, and excellence. This will drive stronger customer loyalty and sustained patronage.”

According to him, the health insurance scheme is not just a welfare gesture but a strategic investment in boosting operational efficiency, enhancing staff productivity, and strengthening the sustainability of NNPC Retail’s business model. He emphasized that the company is going beyond merely dispensing fuel to building a workforce that is healthy, motivated, and better positioned to deliver world-class service.

In his remarks, the Deputy Director of Information Technology, Ademola Adebusuyi, who represented the Managing Director of NNPC HMO, expressed the organisation’s readiness to work with reliable healthcare providers nationwide to ensure that beneficiaries receive quality medical attention when needed.

Adebusuyi explained that the health insurance package includes access to an extensive network of hospitals and clinics across the country, enabling service attendants to obtain care regardless of their state or location.

“Good health is the foundation of productivity,” he said. “We encourage all attendants to take full advantage of this opportunity. The Attendants’ Health Insurance Scheme guarantees access to medical care whenever it is needed, irrespective of where you are deployed across Nigeria. This initiative is a clear demonstration that NNPC stands solidly behind you. When illness comes, you are not alone—the full support of the organisation is with you.”

The new scheme is expected to significantly improve morale across petrol stations, strengthen the retention of experienced attendants, and reduce the financial strain associated with healthcare challenges for low- and mid-level service employees.

Speaking on behalf of service attendants, Dorcas Luke Onyeche, a Customer Service Attendant at the Abuja NNPC Mega Station, expressed gratitude to the NNPC Retail leadership for prioritizing the wellbeing of frontline workers. She noted that the initiative would not only give attendants peace of mind but also encourage them to deliver better-quality service to customers.

“This health insurance package gives us confidence and a sense of belonging,” she said. “We now know that the company truly values us. With this support, we are more motivated to serve customers with dedication and contribute more meaningfully to the success of the organization.”

The initiative has been widely applauded by stakeholders in the oil and gas retail sector, with many noting that extending structured health coverage to service attendants—often among the most vulnerable in the industry—sets a new standard for welfare-oriented governance in the downstream sector.

The launch further reinforces NNPC Ltd’s ongoing transformation agenda, which prioritizes operational excellence, workforce development, and adherence to global best practices across the value chain.
