An Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has strongly condemned what it described as acts of religious discrimination, abuse of office and administrative misconduct at Olubi Memorial Grammar School, Kudeti, Ibadan.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 25th February, 2026, and signed by the Oyo State Secretary of the organisation, Ambassador Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, the group accused officials of the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the school management of attempting to suppress the religious rights of Muslim teachers and students.

The statement reads:

“MURIC has received disturbing reports of systematic victimisation of Muslim staff and students at Olubi Memorial Grammar School, Kudeti. These reports include the transfer of five Muslim teachers who allegedly stood in defence of students’ constitutional religious rights, suspension of religious activities, and administrative directives perceived as targeting Islamic practices within the school.”

“The school, formerly known as Urban Day Grammar School, Kudeti, before its renaming in 1985, is a government-established public institution. Therefore, it is neither a missionary school nor the property of any religious body. Any attempt to present it as a denominational institution is historically and administratively incorrect.”

MURIC noted that eight staff members were recently transferred by TESCOM Ibadan Zone 1, with investigations suggesting that five of them were Muslims who advocated for the rights of Muslim students to observe prayers and participate freely in faith-based activities. Three Christian staff members were also reportedly transferred.

The organisation further condemned the directive allegedly suspending all religious activities within the school premises, describing it as disproportionate and discriminatory.

“Public schools funded by taxpayers’ money cannot be turned into religious enclaves. Muslim students have the constitutional right to observe their daily prayers, operate their Students’ Society (MSSN), wear hijab, and participate equitably in school assemblies.”

MURIC also raised concerns over the recent posting of five new teachers to the school on Monday, 23rd February 2026, noting that four are Christians while only one is a Muslim (IRS teacher), despite the need for additional Islamic Religious Studies personnel.

MURIC’S DEMANDS

The organisation therefore demanded:

“The immediate suspension of the school principal, Pastor Adegbola, Vice Principal (Admin) Mr. Oluwatoyin, and Vice Principal Mrs. Enahoro, pending a full and transparent investigation into allegations of religious discrimination and abuse of office.”

“The immediate redeployment back to the school of the five Muslim teachers who were unjustly transferred.”

“Restoration of MSSN activities within the school and provision of equal opportunities in conducting assemblies, two days for Muslims, two days for Christians, and Wednesday for general/circular assembly.”

“Unhindered observance of Dhur prayer and accommodation for Jumu’ah where feasible.”

“Unrestricted use of hijab in line with constitutional provisions and judicial precedents.”

“Posting of at least one additional qualified IRS teacher to the school.”

“Administrative balance in leadership postings to prevent religious domination.”

“Consideration of reverting the school’s name to Urban Day Grammar School Kudeti in order to reflect its public ownership and eliminate denominational claims.”

MURIC warned against what it described as subtle exhibition of religious supremacy in public institutions.

“We reiterate that MURIC stands for dialogue, not violence. However, silence in the face of oppression is not an option. We shall pursue all lawful and constitutional means to ensure that justice prevails and that Muslim students and teachers in Oyo State are not subjected to discrimination.”

The group called on the Oyo State Government to intervene decisively in order to prevent further escalation and to protect peaceful coexistence in the state’s education sector.

Signed:

Ambassador Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade

Secretary,

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC),

Oyo State Chapter
