Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, the former senator who represented Abia Central Senatorial District, has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over alleged injustice and manipulation of the party’s internal electoral process.
Nwaogu, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Osisioma Ngwa/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, confirmed her resignation from the APC on Thursday, May 28.
“I can confirm that I have left the party,” Nwaogu said.
The former lawmaker blamed her decision on the conduct of the APC primary election in her senatorial zone, insisting that the exercise that produced the party’s candidate for the Senatorial District, Emeka Atuma, lacked transparency.
According to her, there was no genuine electoral process in the area, alleging that some party leaders had hijacked the structure and were undermining internal democracy within the APC.
“In my zone, there was no election. I know I have an advantage in my zone. When I saw the shenanigans of them trying to destroy the party we built, I knew they were losing touch,” she said.
She further accused unnamed stakeholders within the party of sabotaging the APC and frustrating members who had worked to strengthen the party structure in the state.
Her resignation comes amid growing speculation that she may align with the 2027 general elections, despite reported efforts by APC leaders to convince her to remain in the party.
Meanwhile, the APC in Abia State said it had yet to receive any official communication from the former senator regarding her resignation.
The party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Uche Aguoru, said the APC leadership was unaware of any formal exit notice of the former lawmaker.
“If she has left the party, I have no knowledge. We are yet to get any letter to that effect,” Aguoru was quoted as saying.
Nwaogu’s departure has further intensified conversations around defections, internal wrangling and unity in the ruling APC as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
