A Nigerian national in South Africa, Emeka Uzor, has been killed after being shot at a filling station in Johannesburg.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) said Uzor was shot dead at about 3pm on Sunday at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg.

In a statement on Monday, NUSA President, Mr Smart Nwobi, and National Publicity Secretary, Mr Akindele Olunloyo, said the deceased, who hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was attacked while inside his vehicle.

The union described the incident as part of a pattern of violence against Nigerian nationals in South Africa.

It called on the South African authorities, including the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“NUSA equally calls on the Nigerian government through the offices of our Consul General and the High Commissioner to actively engage diplomatically with their South African counterparts,” the statement said.

While expressing confidence in South Africa’s justice system, the union said it hoped the perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted to give the victim’s family a sense of closure.

The union also called on the Nigerian Mission to work with NUSA to address issues diplomatically and legally.

NUSA urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that it was working with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
