The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) commends the Anambra State Government for the decisive and transparent manner in which it has so far responded to the unfortunate assault on a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante group.
We acknowledge the seriousness with which the government has handled the matter—ordering investigations, arresting and publicly parading the perpetrators, openly condemning their actions, and engaging the media to update the public. These steps demonstrate openness, responsiveness, and a genuine commitment to justice. For this, FOSAD salutes the leadership of the state government.
That said, we believe more can and should be done. As earlier outlined, FOSAD respectfully urges the government to:
Undertake a comprehensive review of vigilante operations across the state to ensure professionalism, accountability, and lawful conduct.
Offer a formal apology and adequate compensation to the assaulted corps member to help restore her dignity and reaffirm the state’s commitment to the welfare of all NYSC members.
Put in place a clear directive guaranteeing the safety, protection, and respect of every corps member serving in Anambra State.
Looking ahead to the November 2025 governorship election, we also encourage the state government to ensure that vigilante groups are not used—directly or indirectly—as instruments of intimidation against opposition parties, candidates, or voters. Preserving the neutrality of security outfits will not only safeguard democracy but also strengthen public trust in governance.
FOSAD remains committed to constructive partnership with the Anambra State Government in ensuring justice, protecting the vulnerable, and deepening democratic values in the South-East.
