Engineer Ndubuisi Chukwuma Okubuiro has been disqualified from contesting the position of President General of Umuihi Town Union following the reading of a petition alleging sexual misconduct and a prolonged dispute involving the wife and children of his younger blood relative.
The dramatic development occurred at Orie Umuihi Market Square, where members of the community had gathered for the election of officers of the Umuihi Town Union.
The controversy erupted after the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Chief Fidelis Okafor presented a petition submitted by Obinwanne Okafor, described as a younger blood relative of Okubuiro. The petition raised allegations concerning Okubuiro’s sexual relationship with Okafor’s wife and the custody and identity of their three children.
According to the allegations contained in the petition, Okubuiro allegedly became involved with the woman after previously playing a role in sponsoring her marriage to Okafor in the Anglican Church. The petitioner alleged that the relationship subsequently contributed to the breakdown of the marriage.
The petition further alleged that Okubuiro had, about six years ago, changed the surnames of the three children from those of their biological father to his own surname.
The allegations have reportedly generated a prolonged family dispute, with aspects of the matter said to have found their way before the courts.
The reading of the petition at the election venue immediately generated tension and controversy among members of the community. Following consideration of the issues raised, the Electoral Committee Chairman announced Okubuiro’s disqualification from the contest.
Chief Ofor reportedly said the allegations raised serious questions about the candidate’s character and suitability to occupy the highest leadership position in the town union.
In disqualifying him, the chairman described Okubuiro as a person who, in the committee’s assessment, lacked the character required to lead the Umuihi community.
The decision effectively prevented Okubuiro from participating in the election for President General, turning what was expected to be a routine community leadership contest into a major controversy.
The case has also attracted attention because of the alleged involvement of the Anglican Church in the dispute. According to information presented in connection with the controversy, the church had taken disciplinary action against Okubuiro over allegations of adultery and cohabitation with the wife of his younger relative.
The reported church action has added a religious dimension to an already sensitive family and community dispute.
Town unions traditionally play important roles in Igbo communities, including mobilising residents for development projects, maintaining community infrastructure, resolving disputes, promoting social cohesion and representing community interests before government and other institutions.
Consequently, the character and reputation of individuals seeking leadership positions are often subjects of intense public scrutiny.
