The free summer learning programme organised by Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly, Amuwo Odofin Constituency II, has ended with 60 of the best-performing students receiving educational materials as rewards for their outstanding performance.

The summer camp, which commenced on August 3, 2026, provided about 300 children with an opportunity to acquire academic knowledge and practical skills during the long school vacation.

The programme was designed to expose the participants to emerging areas of knowledge and technology while also strengthening their understanding of key academic subjects.

Among the areas covered during the programme were Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Coding and Health Management.

The initiative was held at 31/41 Olagoke Street, Ijegun Egba, within the premises of the Catholic Church of Resurrection, Satellite Town, Lagos. Classes were conducted from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Unlike conventional holiday lessons that often focus primarily on classroom instruction, the programme combined academic learning with practical and technology-driven activities aimed at preparing the children for a rapidly changing world.

At the end of the programme, 60 students who distinguished themselves through their performance and participation were recognised and presented with educational items, including exercise books and water bottles.

The presentation was part of efforts by the organisers to encourage academic excellence, discipline, active participation and commitment to learning among the participating children.

The students were drawn from different educational levels, with the programme catering for pupils and students from nursery and primary classes through junior and senior secondary school levels.

A report-card structure prepared for the summer lesson programme shows that students were assessed across different classes and subjects. The assessment covered areas including Mathematics, English, Christian Religious Studies, Social Studies, Basic Science, Biology, Economics, Commerce, Accounting, Chemistry and Physics, depending on the students’ class levels.

The programme therefore combined conventional academic reinforcement with exposure to modern technological skills, giving participants an opportunity to learn beyond what they ordinarily encounter in the classroom.

The organisers also recognised the contributions of the teachers who handled the different aspects of the summer camp.

The teachers were rewarded for their commitment to the programme and for helping the students acquire practical knowledge in STEM, Robotics, AI, Coding and Health Management.

Their recognition underscored the importance of teachers in shaping the academic and technological development of young people, particularly at a time when digital skills are becoming increasingly important in education and employment.

The summer programme was completely free for all participating students, with the expenses personally funded by Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko.

The decision to provide the programme at no cost to the families of the participating children was aimed at ensuring that children from different socio-economic backgrounds could benefit from the learning opportunities.

By removing financial barriers, the organisers sought to make quality holiday education accessible to families who might otherwise struggle to afford additional academic or technology-based training for their children.

The initiative also provided parents and guardians with an opportunity to keep their children productively engaged during the school vacation.

Beyond keeping the students academically active, the organisers sought to use the period to introduce them to practical skills that could become valuable as they progress through their education.

The emphasis on STEM, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Coding reflects the growing recognition that children need early exposure to technology and problem-solving skills to remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy.

Artificial intelligence, robotics and coding are rapidly transforming industries globally, while STEM education is increasingly regarded as an important foundation for innovation, entrepreneurship and scientific development.

For the participants, the summer camp consequently offered more than additional classroom lessons. It provided an opportunity to explore areas of learning that could influence their future educational and career choices.

The programme also included Health Management, giving the children exposure to knowledge concerning health and personal wellbeing alongside their academic and technological training.

The completion of the camp marks the conclusion of a nearly four-week educational intervention that brought together about 300 children during the 2026 school vacation.

The organisers said the rewards for the 60 best-performing students were intended not only to celebrate their achievements but also to motivate other participants to pursue excellence in their academic activities.

Similarly, the recognition of the teachers highlighted the role of dedicated educators in delivering effective learning programmes.

The initiative adds to the growing emphasis on community-based educational interventions designed to complement formal schooling and equip young people with practical skills.

For Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, the programme provides an avenue to support children and families within Amuwo Odofin Constituency II while promoting education, technological awareness and youth development.

The successful completion of the summer camp is expected to leave the participating children with stronger academic foundations, new practical skills and greater exposure to technology.

With 300 children participating and 60 of the top-performing students rewarded, the programme also placed emphasis on merit, encouraging participants to take their studies seriously and strive for continuous improvement.

The initiative demonstrates how structured holiday programmes can be used to combine academic reinforcement with practical learning, particularly in areas such as technology, science and innovation.

As the students return to their regular schools after the vacation, the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme are expected to complement their formal education and potentially inspire some of them to pursue future careers in science, technology, engineering, medicine and other related fields.

The organisers expressed appreciation to the teachers, parents, volunteers and other stakeholders whose contributions helped make the programme possible.

The completion of the free summer camp therefore represents not just the end of a holiday learning programme, but an investment in the education, skills development and future aspirations of hundreds of children in the community
