The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a staff member of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Segun Bode Adedeji, before the Edo State High Court over an alleged N3.2million fraud.

Adedeji was arraigned before Justice E. G. Adekanmbi on a four-count charge bordering on fraudulent practices involving the sum of N3,285,396.

According to the anti-graft agency, Adedeji’s arraignment followed intelligence gathered by operatives of the Commission, which allegedly revealed that while employed by the University of Benin, he was simultaneously receiving salaries from the National Orthopedic Hospital, Benin City.

The EFCC alleged that Adedeji unlawfully drew salaries from both public institutions at the same time, resulting in financial losses to the government.

The Commission said its investigation uncovered evidence suggesting that the defendant received a total of N3,285,396 through the alleged double salary payments.

The charges were subsequently filed before the Edo State High Court, where the defendant was formally arraigned.

Details of his plea and the court’s ruling on bail were not immediately available.

The EFCC stated that the prosecution is part of its efforts to curb fraud and other financial crimes within public institutions.

The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.
