The newly sworn-in Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Eze Paul Ituma, has issued a strong warning to opposition politicians, declaring that those unwilling to align with the administration should stay away from the council area.
Ituma, speaking after his swearing-in, said opposition elements would not be welcomed in Ohaukwu unless they were prepared to embrace the political direction advocated by the state government.
He said, “Except the opposition are ready to submit to us so that we can embrace them, as the Governor advised, otherwise, they shouldn’t step into Ohaukwu.”
The council chairman further warned that anyone who attempted to operate politically in the area against his administration or the ruling political structure would be declared persona non grata.
According to him, the current political season requires his full attention, stressing that politics remains his primary business.
“This is the time for politics. I don’t have a shop at the International Market or Okwo Ngbo Market; politics is my business,” he stated.
Ituma also warned individuals who might seek to undermine his political interests, using a popular Nigerian expression to emphasise his resolve.
“Anyone who wants to put sand in my garri should not come close to Ohaukwu,” he warned.
The remarks have sparked concerns over the political atmosphere in the council area, particularly regarding the treatment of opposition parties and the extent to which political differences may affect democratic participation at the grassroots.
The chairman’s comments come amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political actors across Ebonyi State increasingly mobilising support and consolidating their positions.
Political observers are expected to closely monitor developments in Ohaukwu, particularly whether the chairman’s warning will translate into restrictions on opposition activities or remain a political statement directed at his opponents.
