Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disowned a purported letter circulating on social media in his name and allegedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe.

Obi described the document as fake, malicious and fabricated, insisting that he neither authored the letter nor appended the signature appearing on it.

In a disclaimer issued on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Obi said the purported correspondence was designed to mislead members of the public by presenting a false communication as an authentic letter from him.

“My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,” Obi said.

“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged,” he added.

The document in circulation is dated September 19, 2026, and bears the title, “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak.” It purports to be a letter from Obi to the Onitsha monarch discussing political developments in Anambra State, including issues relating to the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and financial records associated with Obi’s tenure as governor.

The purported letter called for the opening of government records and examination of financial documents, while urging that questions concerning the state’s finances should be addressed through evidence and transparency.

It also appealed to traditional rulers, political leaders and elders to avoid allowing political disagreements to create divisions among the Igbo people.

However, Obi has made it clear that the contents of the document should not be attributed to him.

The denial comes against the backdrop of a continuing public dispute over Anambra State’s financial obligations and the records of previous administrations.

The Anambra State Government recently released details of eight external loan facilities it said were contracted during Obi’s administration. The state government said the outstanding balance was about ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026, while Obi has disputed the characterisation of his administration’s financial record and maintained that he left office without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or liabilities to contractors for completed projects.

The circulation of the purported letter has therefore added another layer to an already contentious public debate. But Obi’s latest statement makes clear that the document itself is not a communication he recognises as genuine.

He urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard the publication.

“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication,” Obi said.

He further stated that his attention remained focused on issues of national development and accountability.

“My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people — never on cheap fabrications,” he said.

The incident also highlights the need for caution when consuming political documents circulated through social media, particularly during an election cycle when statements attributed to political figures can quickly gain public attention.

For now, Obi’s position is that the letter is not genuine, that its contents should not be credited to him and that the signature attached to it was forged.

This version keeps the allegations in the disputed letter clearly separated from Obi’s verified disclaimer and the broader Anambra financial dispute.
