Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused individuals allegedly linked to the Benue State Government of sponsoring thugs who blocked his motorcade during a condolence visit to communities affected by recent terrorist attacks.
Obi said the incident occurred while he was travelling to commiserate with families and communities mourning the deaths of more than 200 people reportedly killed in recent attacks in Benue State. According to him, the disruption was not only unnecessary but also raised serious questions about the willingness of political authorities to allow citizens and political leaders to freely engage with communities experiencing insecurity and hardship.
The NDC presidential candidate alleged that the group involved in the blockade was led by a Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor. He described those who confronted his convoy as “government-sponsored thugs,” alleging that their actions were intended to prevent him from reaching the affected communities.
Obi expressed concern that a condolence visit, which he said was motivated by sympathy for grieving families, had become an occasion for confrontation and political obstruction. He argued that political differences should not be allowed to override the basic responsibility of leaders to comfort citizens facing tragedy.
According to Obi, the development was particularly disturbing because the affected communities were already struggling with the consequences of insecurity, displacement, poverty and loss of livelihoods. He maintained that Nigerians should not have to contend with additional barriers when political leaders attempt to reach victims and listen directly to their experiences.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised what he described as a broader culture of political intolerance in Nigeria. He argued that leaders across political divides should be able to visit communities, interact with citizens and express solidarity with victims of violence without being subjected to intimidation or obstruction.
Obi said the incident reflected a deeper problem in the country’s political system, where access to citizens can sometimes become entangled with partisan interests. In his view, public officials have a responsibility to protect democratic engagement rather than restrict it.
He further questioned the circumstances surrounding the security challenges confronting Nigerians, particularly in communities repeatedly affected by attacks. He argued that the focus of government at such moments should be on protecting lives, supporting victims and restoring confidence among residents rather than engaging in political confrontation.
“Nigerians cannot continue to live in hunger and insecurity while access to their own leaders is deliberately obstructed,” Obi reportedly said, stressing the need for political leaders to place the welfare of citizens above partisan considerations.
The NDC candidate has consistently made insecurity, poverty and economic hardship central themes of his political messaging. His latest comments similarly linked the reported incident to what he considers the wider failure of political leadership to adequately respond to the challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians.
The alleged blockade has also raised questions about the relationship between political competition and citizens’ freedom to engage with opposition politicians. In a democratic system, political differences are expected, but peaceful interaction between leaders and citizens remains an important component of democratic participation.
Obi’s account of the incident has not, however, independently established that the individuals involved were sponsored by the Benue State Government. The allegation remains his characterization of the confrontation, and any response from the Benue State Government or the Special Adviser accused of leading the group would be necessary to provide the other side of the story.
Beyond the immediate confrontation, the incident highlights the growing tension surrounding political activities in communities affected by insecurity. Families who have lost relatives to violence often require not only security but also humanitarian assistance, emotional support and meaningful engagement from government and political leaders.
For Obi, the episode underscores the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s twin challenges of insecurity and economic hardship. He maintained that political leaders should be working collectively to restore safety, reduce hunger and strengthen public confidence in government.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, incidents involving political leaders and supporters are likely to attract increased public scrutiny. The ability of political actors to disagree without intimidation, obstruction or violence will remain an important test of the country’s democratic culture.
The controversy surrounding Obi’s condolence visit therefore extends beyond the alleged blockade itself. It raises broader questions about political tolerance, access to affected communities, government accountability and the responsibilities of leaders during periods of national tragedy.
