As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day on June 12, House of Representatives aspirant for Ajeromi–Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, has extended warm greetings to his constituents and Nigerians at large, calling for renewed commitment to democratic values and national development.
In his message commemorating the historic date, OmoBarca described June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s long struggle for electoral justice, civil liberty, and popular participation in governance, stressing that the day remains one of the most defining moments in the country’s political evolution.
He urged residents of Ajeromi–Ifelodun and Nigerians across the federation to remain hopeful and steadfast in the democratic journey, noting that despite existing socio-economic challenges, the country has made significant progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
According to him, Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic experience over the past 27 years represents a milestone that should not be taken for granted, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of prolonged military rule in the nation’s history.
He noted that while the democratic system is still evolving and requires continuous improvement, it has nonetheless created space for civic participation, freedom of expression, and competitive elections that allow citizens to choose their leaders.
“Democracy is not a destination but a process,” he said, emphasizing that the strength of any democratic system lies in the willingness of the people to remain engaged and demand accountability from those in power.
OmoBarca encouraged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s democratic institutions, urging citizens to continue to believe in the possibility of a better and more prosperous nation.
He acknowledged the economic pressures facing many households, particularly in urban constituencies like Ajeromi–Ifelodun, but maintained that sustained democratic governance remains the most viable pathway to long-term stability and development.
He further called on political leaders at all levels to prioritize policies that directly improve the welfare of citizens, especially in areas such as education, employment, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Reaffirming his connection with the people of Ajeromi–Ifelodun, OmoBarca pledged to continue engaging with community stakeholders, youth groups, and market associations in the constituency as part of his broader vision for inclusive representation.
He stated that the essence of democratic participation is service to the people, adding that leadership must always reflect responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of the electorate.
According to him, “The people remain the foundation of democracy, and their voices must continue to guide governance at every level.”
June 12, officially recognized as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The date has since become a national symbol of the struggle for democratic governance and electoral integrity.
As Nigerians reflect on the significance of the day, OmoBarca’s message adds to growing calls for deeper reforms and stronger institutions capable of sustaining democratic gains and addressing contemporary challenges.
