Cyril Ramaphosa, South African president, chaired the meeting.

According to a tweet by the South African presidency, the council will advise the president and the government in facilitating the development and implementation of economic policies that spur inclusive growth.

It will also serve as a forum for in-depth discussions on emerging global and domestic developments, economic and development policies.

The council was inaugurated in October, 2019 but Okonjo-Iweala is not a member.
