A massive number of demonstrators gathered at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, braving persistent rainfall to demand greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.

What initially began as a protest associated with a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) quickly expanded into a wider movement, attracting participants from various political parties and civil groups. The demonstration evolved into a unified call to protect democracy and raise concerns about the credibility of the electoral system.

One of the protesters, Muyideen Bashiru, noted that the large turnout reflected widespread concern cutting across political affiliations, with people travelling from different parts of the country to participate.

Prominent political figures present at the protest included David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye, among others.

The demonstrators had earlier assembled at David Mark’s residence, where a brief service was held to commemorate his 78th birthday, before proceeding in an organised march toward the INEC office.

From the Apo Legislative Quarters, the procession grew larger as it advanced, eventually taking over major roads within the Federal Capital Territory. Bashiru explained that although a similar protest had been planned for the previous week, it was called off due to heavy security presence, including roadblocks and patrol units.

However, Wednesday’s demonstration appeared to occur without prior notice, suggesting a change in strategy that may have taken security agencies by surprise.

Despite the rainy weather, the crowd continued to swell at the INEC headquarters, maintaining a charged but largely peaceful atmosphere as calls for electoral reforms intensified.
