May Day: FG declares Friday public holiday for Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the 2026 International Workers’ Day.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the federal government, on Thursday, April 30, in Abuja.

The minister extended his congratulations to the Nigerian workforce for their continued contribution to the nation’s progress.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the Minister commended the Nigeria’s labourers for their dedication and resilience.

He described their efforts as the essential engine driving Nigeria’s growth and economic prosperity.

“The efforts of Nigerian workers are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the Minister said.

He encouraged the workforce to remain steadfast in their commitment to national development.

Tunji-Ojo further urged employees across both the public and private sectors to embrace the values of patriotism and high productivity.

He emphasised that such dedication is “crucial for sustainable development” as the country navigates its current economic path.

Reiterating the administration’s stance on labour relations, the minister stated that the federal government remains committed to prioritising the welfare and security of all workers while fostering a favourable environment for business and economic expansion.

While wishing the public a happy celebration, Tunji-Ojo called on all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the festivities.

He encouraged citizens to use the holiday as an opportunity to reflect on the vital roles that unity and hard work play in the ongoing task of nation building.
