The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) expresses profound sadness over the tragic and controversial death of 26-year-old Mary Habila on June 27, 2026 at the residence of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased. The untimely death of a young Nigerian under circumstances that have generated widespread public concern is a matter that deserves the highest level of attention from relevant authorities.

The conflicting accounts surrounding the incident, the public disclosures that have emerged in recent days, and the continued public interest in the case underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based investigation capable of establishing the true circumstances that led to Mary Habila’s death.

FOSAD believes that justice can only be served when investigations are conducted professionally, independently and without fear or favour. Any perception that the investigation is compromised would undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s criminal justice system and further erode citizens’ trust in public institutions.

We therefore call on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant investigative agencies to ensure that every aspect of the case is thoroughly examined. This should include forensic analysis, witness interviews, digital evidence, medical records and every other relevant material capable of assisting investigators to establish the facts.

We also urge that the proposed autopsy be conducted in accordance with internationally accepted forensic standards and, where necessary, with the participation of independent forensic pathologists to guarantee credibility and public confidence in the outcome.

As an organization committed to the promotion of justice, accountability and the rule of law, FOSAD emphasizes that no individual should be presumed guilty in the absence of credible evidence. Equally, no person, regardless of public office or influence, should be shielded from lawful scrutiny where legitimate questions require answers.

The circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death have attracted national and international attention, making it imperative that the investigation is conducted with utmost professionalism and openness.

We also appeal to the media, civil society organizations and members of the public to exercise restraint by avoiding speculation, misinformation or the dissemination of unverified claims that may prejudice ongoing investigations. Responsible public discourse should complement, rather than undermine, the search for truth and justice.

FOSAD stands firmly with the family of Mary Habila during this difficult period and urges the authorities to ensure that they are treated with dignity, compassion and fairness throughout the investigative process.

Ultimately, justice for Mary Habila is not only about determining the cause and circumstances of her death; it is also about reaffirming the principle that every Nigerian life matters and that every suspicious death deserves a credible and transparent investigation.

Signed:

Dr. Stephen Nwala
President
Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD)

Dr. Uzor Ngoladi
