AMagistrate Court sitting in Kano has ordered the remand of a popular TikTok content creator, Ashiru Idris, widely known as Mai Wushirya, at a correctional centre for allegedly posting ‘indecent videos’ involving a dwarf woman whose identity has not been disclosed.
The presiding judge, Magistrate Halima Wali of Court No. 7, issued the order on Monday, directing that the social media personality be remanded for two weeks pending the continuation of his trial.
According to LEADERSHIP, officials of the Kano State Censorship Board arrested Mai Wushirya last week after videos surfaced online showing him half-naked and engaging in what the Board described as “immoral and demeaning acts” with the woman.
The Board said the viral clips violated the Kano State Censorship Laws, which prohibit the production and circulation of obscene or sexually suggestive materials.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the court session, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer of the Censorship Board, stated that the court also ordered the woman featured in the videos to appear before the next hearing.
“The court has also ordered his partner to appear in court before the hearing continues. Even before we arraigned him, we tried to get him to cooperate with us in locating her, but he refused. However, now that the court has ordered it, I’m sure we will be successful in bringing her,” Sulaiman stated.
He further disclosed that intelligence reports indicated that the woman fled to Zamfara State shortly after the videos went viral, but efforts were ongoing to bring her back to Kano to face prosecution alongside the TikToker.
“We have received credible reports that the woman involved has escaped to Zamfara. However, our operatives are working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure she is apprehended and brought to face the law,” he added.
Mai Wushirya, known for his controversial and often comedic skits, has a large following on TikTok, where he frequently posts short videos that have occasionally drawn the ire of conservative audiences in the predominantly Muslim state.
The case has been adjourned for two weeks, during which the court is expected to determine the next steps in the prosecution of both the TikToker and his female partner.
