The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is appealing to the federal government to intervene and facilitate a resolution that would see Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike reopened.

The University plays a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of agricultural experts, innovators, and leaders. However, the decision to raise tuition fees threatens to place this education out of reach for many aspiring students.

Education is not merely a commodity; it is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of societal progress. When financial barriers impede access to education, the entire community suffers.

FOSAD’s call for government intervention is grounded in a deep understanding of the broader implications of the university’s closure. Beyond the immediate impact on students and faculty, the shutdown of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture disrupts research endeavors, halts community outreach programs, and undermines the regional and national agricultural development efforts. In a country where agriculture is a vital sector of the economy, the importance of maintaining a thriving agricultural university cannot be overstated.

Moreover, the closure of the university exacerbates existing inequalities in education. Students from marginalized backgrounds are disproportionately affected by tuition hikes, further widening the gap between the privileged few and the disadvantaged many.

By advocating for the reopening of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, FOSAD seeks to uphold principles of equity and social justice, ensuring that all individuals have equal opportunities to pursue their educational aspirations.

The federal government’s role in resolving this dispute is pivotal. As the custodian of national educational policies and resources, the government holds the power to influence the direction of higher education in Nigeria. By engaging with stakeholders, mediating negotiations, and providing financial support where necessary, the government can facilitate a sustainable solution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.

By prioritizing the reopening of the university and taking proactive measures to prevent similar crises in the future, the government demonstrates its dedication to fostering an environment where learning thrives, regardless of economic status.

It is essential to recognize that the resolution of this dispute requires collaboration and compromise from all stakeholders. University administrators, students, faculty members, and government officials must come together in good faith to find a path forward that ensures the sustainability and accessibility of higher education in Nigeria.

While the road ahead may be challenging, it is not insurmountable, especially with the collective will and determination of those invested in the future of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

Signed
