Former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is currently in the custody of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over allegations of financial crimes running into ₦189 billion, SaharaReporters has learnt.

Top EFCC sources who spoke to newsmen on Monday said Tambuwal, who also once served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, was invited to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning and arrived at about 11:30am before being ushered into an interrogation room.

The sources said the former governor is being grilled over alleged massive cash withdrawals made in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Details of the exact period during which the withdrawals were allegedly made remain unclear at press time.

Tambuwal governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023, after holding the position of House of Representatives Speaker from 2011 to 2015.

He currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.

When contacted, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, declined to comment on the matter.
