Aformer student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, identified as Oyelade Habeeb Olawale, has been killed in a violent clash linked to cult groups on the school campus.
Olawale, who studied Civil Engineering and bore matriculation number ND/20/CEC/FT/206, was reportedly attacked on Tuesday during a confrontation involving rival cult groups. Many of them are reportedly former students said to have infiltrated the campus for the operation.
SaharaReporters gathered that the attack was swift and targeted, triggering panic among students before security operatives intervened.
Several suspects alleged to be connected to the killing were immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the polytechnic, Halimat Garba, described the killing as “unfortunate” and reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism and criminal activity.
“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” she said.
Garba disclosed that the school’s security unit acted promptly based on intelligence gathered prior to the attack.
“The management wishes to state categorically that the Polytechnic security personnel have immediately responded to the situation through their intelligence, and several suspects believed to be connected to the incident have been apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigations,” she added.
She assured that calm had been restored, noting that academic and administrative activities were continuing without disruption.
“To this end, we are pleased to report that normalcy has returned to the campus, and the Polytechnic remains a safe environment for learning and personal development,” she said.
“The Polytechnic remains vigilant against any form of violence or cult-related activities and on-top of all security matters through its various security apparatus.
“We urge our students and the community to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities to help maintain peace and safety within our campus.”
However, the police have yet to issue a detailed statement on the arrests, but investigations are said to be ongoing.
