In recent years, a new generation of composers has emerged with a passion for preserving and advancing African choral and sacred music. Among them is Edafe Prince Obemuajeta, a gifted musicologist, composer, performer, vocalist, and choral director whose work continues to attract growing recognition within and beyond Nigeria.

Edafe Prince Obemuajeta, born in Warri and hailing from Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, is now based in London, United Kingdom. Despite his international presence, he remains deeply rooted in his African musical heritage. Through his compositions, performances, and artistic leadership, Edafe consistently seeks to preserve, promote, and celebrate African musical traditions while presenting them in ways that connect meaningfully with contemporary audiences across cultures.

One of his notable compositions, “Eye Jesu” (Jesus is Born), reflects his ability to combine traditional African musical expressions with modern choral writing. The work is rich in melody, accessible to performers and listeners alike, and carries a strong emotional appeal. Its warm reception by audiences highlighted not only the quality of the composition but also Edafe’s ability to communicate powerful messages through music.

Another remarkable work, “Jiri Onowo” (Praise Our Lord), further revealed his growth and confidence as a composer. Performed by the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Choir during an international singing exercise in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the piece showcased a thoughtful understanding of choral texture, vocal expression, and congregational participation. Its uplifting spirit and artistic depth earned admiration from both performers and audiences.

Beyond composition, Edafe has continued to distinguish himself as a versatile performer. His involvement in opera and orchestral performances with The Benin Chorale and Philharmonic, demonstrated not only technical competence but also a strong stage presence and musical sensitivity. His performances reflected an artist capable of adapting to different musical styles while maintaining a distinctive artistic identity.

His dedication to musical service has also been recognised through the award of a Certificate of Dedicated Service as Choirmaster by the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Choir, Delta State. This honour speaks to his commitment not only as a musician but also as a mentor and leader who has invested time and effort in nurturing singers and strengthening choral music within his community.

A further highlight of his artistic journey came when he was invited to perform as a guest soloist at a music exhibition organised by the Department of Music, Delta State University. Such invitations are often extended to musicians whose talent, professionalism, and artistic contributions have earned the respect of colleagues and the wider music community.

What makes Edafe particularly noteworthy is his ability to balance creativity, scholarship, and leadership. His work reflects a genuine understanding of African musical traditions, while his innovative approach continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary choral music.

As his career continues to develop, Edafe Prince Obemuajeta is steadily establishing himself as an important voice in African sacred and choral music. Through his compositions, performances, and commitment to musical excellence, he is making meaningful contributions to the cultural and artistic landscape, with the potential to leave an enduring mark on the international music scene.
