Fresh details have emerged surrounding the death of British-Nigerian businessman and social media influencer Igho “Tiny” Ubiribo, also known by his online names Denisi and Ego, following an inquest into his death in the United Kingdom.
Ubiribo, 43, reportedly died after undergoing a cosmetic penis-enlargement procedure during a luxury trip to Thailand with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen. According to evidence presented at Inner West London Coroners’ Court, the procedure took place at a clinic in Bangkok in March.
Reports from the inquest stated that about 40 millilitres of a combination of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were injected into Ubiribo’s penis during the cosmetic treatment.
What was intended to be a routine cosmetic procedure reportedly developed into a medical emergency shortly afterwards.
Following the treatment, Ubiribo and his wife reportedly went for a massage. It was during the outing that he began experiencing chest pain and subsequently collapsed twice.
He was rushed to Sukhumvit Hospital in Bangkok, where doctors reportedly diagnosed him with a pulmonary embolism. The condition occurs when a blood clot or other material blocks an artery in the lungs and can become life-threatening if blood flow to the lungs is severely obstructed.
Medical personnel reportedly made extensive efforts to save his life. According to the account presented during the inquest, doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes.
Despite the prolonged resuscitation attempt, Ubiribo died in the early hours of March 6.
Further examination of his death in the United Kingdom reportedly produced significant findings. A postmortem examination allegedly detected cellular material in his lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used during the cosmetic procedure in Bangkok.
The evidence subsequently became central to the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Following the inquest, Coroner Jean Harkin reportedly concluded that Ubiribo died from a pulmonary embolism caused by complications associated with the cosmetic procedure.
The case has drawn attention to the potential risks associated with cosmetic procedures, particularly treatments undertaken outside a person’s home country. Although cosmetic procedures are increasingly popular worldwide, medical experts generally emphasise that every invasive or injectable treatment carries potential risks and should be performed by appropriately qualified professionals in facilities capable of managing complications.
Ubiribo was reportedly well known on social media, where he had built a following of approximately 185,000 people on Instagram. His online presence was associated with an extravagant lifestyle, luxury experiences and high-profile social connections.
His death has therefore attracted considerable attention, particularly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding it and the fact that he was only 43 years old.
His funeral also reportedly reflected the lavish lifestyle for which he had become known. Ubiribo was buried in London in a gold coffin reportedly valued at about $745,000.
Several prominent Nigerian personalities were said to have attended the funeral, including music star Davido and socialite Cubana Chief Priest.
The circumstances of Ubiribo’s death have prompted renewed conversations about the importance of understanding the risks associated with cosmetic procedures. Injectable treatments, including those involving dermal fillers, may carry complications depending on the substance used, the injection technique, the location of injection and the patient’s individual medical circumstances.
The reported finding of material in Ubiribo’s lungs has made his case particularly striking and has raised questions about how complications from cosmetic procedures can develop rapidly and, in severe cases, become fatal.
