By Dr Ifeyinwa Nwakwesi

On this United Nations International Day of the Girl Child 2025, I celebrate the strength, resilience, and potential of girls across Nigeria and the world. This day reminds us of our collective responsibility to break down harmful stereotypes that limit the girl child and to empower her to become the best version of herself.

Our commitment is strong and unwavering as we collaborate with The Women International (TWI), the primary initiator of the Pink-Up for Girls Initiative, to promote growth mindset and integrative lifestyle training for girls. This training equips them with the tools to embrace their innate strengths, make empowered decisions, and rise above societal and cultural conditioning.

Girls must understand that they are blessed with unique gifts and the power to make choices that shape their futures. They must learn to prioritize their goals, live authentically with faith, maintain positive mindsets, care for their health and wellbeing, and nurture their creativity to achieve academic and personal success. No one should steal their joy or diminish their worth.

We urge women to adopt mentorship roles for young girls, guiding them through challenges and triumphs. Importantly, boys must also be included in training programs to prepare them as future leaders, husbands, and fathers who respect and uplift girls and women.

Women Aligned for Growth (WAG) is establishing a Women and Youth Upscale Impact Fund, dedicated to intensifying advocacy efforts to curb early girl marriage, reduce abuse, halt prostitution, and address other challenges affecting girls’ wellbeing.

Breaking stereotypes is a vital step toward gender equality and unlocking girls’ full potential. Here are key strategies to challenge and overcome these limiting beliefs:

Promote diverse role models in non-traditional careers such as STEM, sports, and leadership.

Encourage girls to explore varied interests without gender bias.

Challenge and discuss gender norms openly to expand girls’ horizons.

Foster critical thinking about stereotypes and societal impacts.

Provide leadership opportunities to build confidence and skills.

Create supportive environments with positive influences from family, teachers, and mentors.

Address media representation by promoting diverse and empowering portrayals of girls and women.

Together, through collaboration and commitment, we can dismantle stereotypes and build a more inclusive society where every girl thrives.

Yours in growth and impact,
