The former governor reportedly died in the morning after a period of illness. His death was announced in a statement issued by his family and signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan.
In the statement, the family expressed profound grief over the loss, describing the late politician as a beloved father, brother, uncle and respected patriarch whose life and public service touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.
His death comes months after his family and media aide, Henry Unini, dismissed reports circulating on social media in June claiming that he had passed away.
At the time, the rumours spread across Facebook and WhatsApp, triggering concern among residents and political stakeholders in Delta State.
Unini publicly refuted the reports, assuring the public that the former governor was alive and receiving medical attention.
“I can tell you for a fact that Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan is alive,” the media aide said at the time.
He acknowledged that Uduaghan had been experiencing health challenges but maintained that he was receiving appropriate medical care and recuperating.
“The rumour was uncalled for,” Unini said, urging the public to verify information before circulating reports about the death of prominent individuals.
The confirmation of Uduaghan’s death on Monday has now brought an end to the uncertainty surrounding the latest reports.
Uduaghan was a medical doctor by profession who rose through public service to become one of the prominent political figures in Delta State.
He served as the state’s Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 before being appointed Secretary to the State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.
He was elected governor in 2007 and served two terms, leaving office in 2015.
During his tenure, his administration pursued programmes relating to infrastructure, healthcare delivery and the development of the state. He remained involved in political and public affairs after leaving office.
Born on October 22, 1954, Uduaghan died three days before his 72nd birthday.
His passing is expected to prompt tributes from political leaders, associates and residents of Delta State, where he served as governor for eight years.
As of the initial reports of his death, funeral arrangements had not been announced.
The family appealed for prayers and comfort for those mourning the former governor, whose death marks the end of a significant chapter in Delta State’s political history.
