A 40-year-old businessman identified as Ogbeni Goggo has reportedly died by suicide in Delta State after a business venture he allegedly financed with a ₦1.8 million loan failed.

The incident has left his wife, relatives and friends devastated, while also drawing attention to the intense financial and emotional pressures confronting individuals struggling with debt and failed investments.

Goggo, who had been married for about three years without children, reportedly sent disturbing messages to some of his friends and family members on Wednesday, August 26, expressing frustration with his circumstances and indicating that he was contemplating ending his life.

Concern reportedly grew after he failed to return home that night. His wife, who became increasingly worried about his whereabouts, contacted relatives and friends as attempts were made to reach him on his telephone.

Despite the efforts to locate him, there was no immediate information about his whereabouts.

The search reportedly continued into Thursday, with family members and others making efforts to establish contact with him and determine where he had gone.

By Friday morning, the situation had become sufficiently alarming for his wife to report him missing at the Ebrumede Police Station in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

At the police station, officers reportedly showed her a photograph of an unidentified deceased man who had been found around the Ebrumede Flyover/DSC Roundabout area.

She reportedly identified the deceased as her husband, bringing a tragic end to the search for him.

According to reports surrounding the incident, Goggo was seen by some individuals in the area after allegedly ingesting a toxic substance. Witnesses reportedly raised an alarm and attempted to obtain assistance, but he had already collapsed and was in serious distress.

The police were subsequently alerted to the incident.

His remains were later evacuated and deposited at a morgue in Agbaro, Delta State, according to reports.

The circumstances surrounding his death have reportedly raised concerns about the financial difficulties he had been experiencing.

Goggo was said to have obtained a loan of approximately ₦1.8 million to invest in a business venture. However, the business reportedly failed to perform as expected, leaving him facing financial pressure and the burden of repaying the loan.

For a small-business owner, the failure of an investment funded through borrowed money can create significant economic strain, particularly when repayment obligations continue despite the loss of expected income.

Although the full circumstances leading to Goggo’s death remain unclear, reports that he communicated his distress to people close to him before his disappearance suggest that he may have been experiencing severe emotional pressure.

His death has therefore renewed concerns about the need for greater attention to mental health, financial counselling and community support for people experiencing overwhelming economic difficulties.

Financial setbacks, business failures and indebtedness can have serious psychological consequences. Experts and support organisations generally encourage people facing such circumstances to seek help from trusted relatives, friends, religious leaders, counsellors or qualified mental-health professionals rather than confronting overwhelming problems alone.

Goggo’s death has reportedly shocked those who knew him, particularly his wife, who had spent days searching for him before learning of his death.

Friends and family members are said to be mourning the businessman as they try to come to terms with the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The incident also serves as a sobering reminder that financial difficulties can affect people profoundly and that those experiencing intense distress may need immediate support.

As investigations into the circumstances of his death continue, relatives and members of the community are expected to provide further information about the events leading to the tragedy.

For those experiencing thoughts of suicide or feeling unable to cope with overwhelming circumstances, seeking immediate help from a trusted person, healthcare professional or emergency service can be critical. No financial setback, however severe, should be faced alone.
