The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is utilizing the opportunity of the New Year 2024 to appeal to all stakeholders in the South-East geopolitical zone to sheath their swords and give peace a chance.

Sustainable peace in the South-East remains the only panacea for economic growth and development.

The South-East region of Nigeria which comprises five states – Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, has been marked by a history of socio-political challenges that have hindered its full economic potential. Achieving lasting peace in the region is not just a matter of security; it is a catalyst for unlocking the economic growth and development that can elevate the entire geopolitical zone.

In South-East Nigeria, the relationship between lasting peace and economic growth is symbiotic and mutually reinforcing. As the region continues to navigate its path towards sustainable development, prioritizing and maintaining peace is not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity.

The dividends of lasting peace extend beyond security; they encompass a flourishing economy, improved living standards, and a brighter future for generations to come. By addressing the root causes of conflicts, fostering good governance, and promoting community engagement, the South-East can lay the foundation for a prosperous and resilient economic landscape that benefits all its residents.

FOSAD is therefore advocating for peace in a bid to engender the following in our beloved South-East:

Investor Confidence and Business Development: Lasting peace is a key factor in attracting investors and fostering a conducive business environment. When an area is characterized by stability and security, investors are more likely to have confidence in making long-term commitments. This, in turn, leads to increased business development and the establishment of industries, creating job opportunities and contributing to the overall economic growth of the region.

Infrastructure Development: Peace is a prerequisite for sustained infrastructure development. In a peaceful environment, governments and private entities can confidently invest in critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and energy facilities. Improved infrastructure not only enhances the movement of goods and services but also lays the groundwork for increased industrialization and economic diversification.

Human Capital Development: Lasting peace positively correlates with human capital development. In a secure environment, educational institutions can thrive, providing quality education that empowers the workforce. An educated and skilled workforce is essential for economic growth as it can drive innovation, increase productivity, and attract high-value industries to the region.

Agricultural Productivity: Agriculture is a significant component of the economy in the South-East. Lasting peace allows farmers to work their land without fear of disruptions. With stability, farmers can adopt modern agricultural practices, access credit facilities, and participate in value chains. Increased agricultural productivity not only ensures food security but also serves as a source of income for rural communities.

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Growth: A peaceful environment nurtures entrepreneurship and the growth of small businesses. With reduced security concerns, individuals are more likely to start and expand their businesses, leading to increased economic activity at the grassroots level. Small businesses are vital in providing goods and services, creating jobs, and fostering community development.

Social Welfare and Poverty Reduction: Economic growth resulting from lasting peace can contribute to social welfare programs and poverty reduction initiatives. Increased government revenue, generated through taxes from thriving businesses, can be channeled into social programs that improve healthcare, education, and overall quality of life for the citizens.

FOSAD is urging the five governors in the South-East to form alliances and synergize both human and material resources to ensure sustainable peace in the region. Let peace reign in 2024.

Happy New Year Ndibeanyi!

Signed

Dr Uzor Ngoladi

Secretary-General, FOSAD
