Hundreds of Brits were pictured stranded at Heathrow Airports as flights were suspended to enforce travel bans in the UK.

Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium have all halted flights over the “out of control” new coronavirus variant, with other nations expected to follow suit.

The measures vary and are short-term but the EU is set to meet on Monday, December 21, to decide on a more coordinated approach.

As well as flights being cancelled, the Eurotunnel also announced it was suspending access to its terminal in Folkestone, Kent.

The new strain of Covid-19 has spread quickly in London and the south east of England, causing Prime Minister Boris Johnson to revise the Christmas restrictions and place around 20 million people into a new Tier 4 level lockdown.

It comes after the UK recorded its highest-ever one-day rise in coronavirus cases with another 35,928 being reported, along with 326 new deaths.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the new variant of Coronavirus as “out of control”.
