Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu which has been under rehabilitation was yesterday reopened by the Federal government. Minister of Aviation, Mr. Hadi Sirika made this known via his Twitter handle:

“To God be all the glory! Despite 6 months delay due to COVID-19 today I had the honour of reopening the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. The rehabilitation includes runway, taxi way, perimeter road, fence, night landing equipment, ILS, emergency center, Pilot lounge etc”

It will be recalled that the Federal Government had in August 2019 shut down Akanu Ibiam International Airport over security reasons.

Some of the reasons include its bad runway and landing aids, the presence of market close to the airport attracting birds, leading to constant bird strikes.

Other concerns also include the wrong placement of the state radio station mast directly facing the runways.
