A37-year-old housewife, Fatima Abubakar, was sentenced to one year in prison by the Chief Magistrate Court II in Yola, Adamawa State, for the torture of her stepchildren, Usman Abubakar, 3, and Hafsat Abubakar, 2.
The sentence will be served at a correctional centre without the option of a fine.
The Adamawa State Police Command earlier in October confirmed the arrest of Fatima Abubakar for physically assaulting her stepchildren.
She had previously been brought before the court with her husband, Abubakar Yuguda, the father of the children, by the prosecuting officer, SP Iliya Akawu, facing charges of child abuse, in violation of Sections 60 and 209 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State.
The court presided over by Magistrate M. A. Adamu, found Fatima guilty of cruelty to persons, leading to the imposed sentence.
In addition to the imprisonment, she was ordered to pay N100,000 to the government and N150,000 for the medical treatment of the abused children.
Fatima admitted to torturing her stepchildren, who were left under her care.
Meanwhile, the father of the children, who was arraigned with her over the child abuse charge, was granted bail.
Abubakar was admitted to bail after he fulfilled the conditions for it, and the court adjourned his matter for the continuation of the hearing.
