The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has attributed the collapse of a two-storey building in the Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State to structural distress.

The agency’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Nosa Okunbor, stated on Monday that the building, located at 20 Amusu Street, Bale Bus Stop, Sari, Orile Iganmu, had been identified as distressed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

Despite eviction notices being served, some occupants refused to vacate the premises.

The statement read in part, “Upon the arrival of the Agency’s Response Team at the incident scene at 09:33hrs, it was observed that a two-storey residential building had collapsed on Monday, 14th October 2024.

“The cause of the collapse was attributed to distress. Further information gathered from LASBCA revealed that the occupants of the building had been served with eviction notices due to its distressed state, but some remained defiant.”

The statement added that, fortunately, there was no loss of life, and no injuries were reported as all occupants escaped safely.

“All occupants of the building evacuated before the collapse as signs of imminent danger became apparent,” it read.

Following the incident, the agency cordoned off the site and evacuated all remaining occupants for safety reasons.
