President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform initiative.
The appointment was announced on Friday.
Jega, a former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside President Tinubu.
The committee provided recommendations to address challenges in the sector, including the creation of a Ministry of Livestock.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said, “His appointment as Special Adviser will reinforce the gains of the presidential committee and ensure the continued momentum of the reforms already in motion.”
Jega, 68, is a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
He served as INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015, overseeing the 2015 general elections.
The Tinubu administration has focused on livestock sector reforms as part of efforts to address conflicts between farmers and herders, food security, and agricultural development.
