Ola Olukayode, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has said that religious leaders exploit people’s funds, and that religious organizations in Nigeria are more corrupt than public offices.
Olukayode stressed that corruption is not just in the government but also deeply rooted in religious institutions.
According to him, “I want to plead with religious leaders, let us use our podium, not only to preach but to demonstrate.
“Just this last week, I have had cause to recover millions from religious organizations. They appointed you a pastor and you use the opportunity to become a big man. We don’t know what you do to earn a living. You leverage on people’s money.”
“You are not accountable as a religious leader and you expect a public officer to be accountable. Some religious organizations are more corrupt than public officers; I have evidence towards that.
“You look at the speck in someone’s eyes while you have a log in yours. And sometimes we try to cover it, but when it is public officers, we throw banters,” he added.
