Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed his support for the relocation of Nigerian nurses and other healthcare workers travelling abroad to seek better opportunities.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State said that professionals, including nurses, seeking opportunities abroad should not be discouraged.

Obi, who said this on Monday in Onitsha, Anambra State, emphasised the importance of education and healthcare as essential resources for the future.

He pointed out that with Nigeria’s population exceeding 200 million, there is no justification for restricting individuals from pursuing opportunities outside the country.

He therefore called on Nigerian leaders to focus on training more professionals, stressing that foreign remittances could significantly contribute to the nation’s economy.

“What we’re doing is not charity; it’s an investment in your future. We must invest in knowledge and health, as they are key to development,” he said.

He further noted the global demand for nursing professionals and encouraged the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to stop hindering those who wish to leave for better opportunities.

Obi said, “Let those who want to go pursue their dreams, while also investing in those who choose to stay. Diaspora remittances can be a valuable revenue source.”

He clarified that his donations are aimed at improving lives rather than personal gain.

“My children won’t attend this university, but I believe in fostering the future rather than simply accumulating titles.

“I’ll be visiting the College of Nursing in Anyimgba tomorrow to help them obtain accreditation,” he added.
