The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the occurrence of stampede during the ill-fated children’s festive party which held at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan on the hardship created by the President Bola Tinubu-led government.

This was stated by the South-West chapter of the party in a statement issued by its spokesman, Chief Sanya Atofarati.

Tragedy struck at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan when a stampede occurred during a children’s Christmas party.

Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, was a key organiser of the tragic children’s festive party. Additionally, Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat, had actively promoted the event in the days leading up to the devastating incident.

The Oyo State Government had confirmed that no fewer than 35 children lost their lives during the tragedy.

The PDP statement reads: “We are using this incident to call on the Federal Government to improve the standard of living in Nigeria. What happened is as a result of poverty in the land.

“The Federal Government should intensify efforts in ensuring that there is provision of adequate jobs for parents to be able to take proper care of their children and also to improve standards of living in the country. The event is quite unfortunate.

“The PDP in the Southwest sympathises with the people and government of Oyo State over the unfortunate incident and the accompanying stampede and loss of lives of children. We prayed that God consoles the families that lost their children in the incident.”
