The Oyo State Government has restated its strong resolve to uphold and enforce the Rule of Law across the state, warning that individuals who flout established regulations risk arrest, prosecution, and potential jail terms or fines.
This assurance was given by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Agency (OYRLEA), Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), during a press briefing held in Ibadan. Justice Aderemi noted that the agency is fully empowered to enforce existing laws on environmental protection, road traffic regulations, and the ban on open grazing and animal rearing in the state.
Describing the agency as the “new sheriff in town,” the retired jurist emphasized that the authority is not introducing new laws but is acting within the bounds of existing legal frameworks. “Our mandate is to enforce an orderly, safe, and clean environment in line with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision for the state,” she stated.
In a firm directive to livestock herders, Justice Aderemi declared that all farm settlements in Oyo State are designated strictly for crop farming. “It is illegal to graze cows, sheep, goats, or any other animals – even chickens – within these settlements,” she asserted, adding that herders must vacate such locations without delay.
Justice Aderemi also clarified the state government’s legal right to appoint members of the Board under any of its laws, affirming that no group or individual holds an automatic entitlement to such appointments.
She further explained that the enforcement process includes the deployment of Mobile Courts and Tribunals across the state, where apprehended offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. “Legal representation will be provided, and where necessary, bail applications can be made. However, failure to comply may result in fines or custodial sentences,” she warned.
The Chairperson urged all residents of Oyo State, regardless of ethnic background or affiliation, to adhere to the laws to avoid sanctions. “Obedience to the Rule of Law is non-negotiable. We are committed to a lawful society, and violators will face the full weight of justice,” she concluded.
