Moments after the House of Representatives endorsed the State of Emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State, the upper chamber of the National Assembly have followed suit.

The Senate has also approved the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

This emergency rule, set to last for six months, aims to address the political crisis in the state.

However, the Senate stated that it could be reviewed or lifted before the end of the period if necessary.

During the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that both legislative chambers would form an ad hoc committee to oversee the administration of the state during the period.

Additionally, the Senate proposed the creation of a separate committee consisting of respected Nigerians to mediate the political conflict while the emergency rule remains in effect.

Like the House of Representatives, which had earlier given its approval, the Senate passed the emergency proclamation through a voice vote.

The decision was reached during a closed session that lasted two hours, with Akpabio reading out the resolutions afterward.

The resolution grants the President the power to review or terminate the emergency rule at any time before the six-month duration lapses, depending on the situation in the state.
