Read Statement:

I condemn the killing of soldiers in Aba on Friday, 31 May 2024. As someone who works closely with officers and troops to manage security matters, I know, first hand, how devoted they are to their duties. These dastardly acts break our hearts but the power of our vision of a secure and safe Abia State is unbreakable. Though our tears may be deep and flow like a river, we are strengthened by His Excellency’s common resolve to give Abians and indeed humanity a better world, and acts of wickedness such as these may distract but not deter us from the pursuit of noble goals.

Every crime has its signature and the criminals who killed gallant members of our troops who sacrifice a lot to keep us secure and safe, must have left their signature on the scene and in the related activities. I encourage security forces to keep an open mind and join forces to diligently investigate these dastardly acts and fish out the culprits.

Ndi Umunneochi and well-meaning individuals are united in their support for His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, and the government of Abia State for the actions that have been taken to restore normalcy in the society. The high-level engagements with the security authorities, the open, transparent and honest communication with the general public, the offer of N25mln reward to anyone who would help find the culprits, and His Excellency’s prompt visit to the families of the deceased to commiserate with them, are prime examples of the stellar leadership qualities and value-added governance that we are becoming accustomed to.

To the families and the Military, please accept our heartfelt condolences. We thank the officers and men of our military and other security agencies for their good works in Umunneochi, Abia State, and Nigeria.

Ndubuisi Ike, FCA,
Mayor of Umunneochi.
2 June 2024.
