The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the remnant of an exploded grenade and two live grenades following a deadly explosion that rocked the Idi-Araba area of Mushin on Thursday, April 3.
The incident occurred at 40 Taiwo Street, Idi-Araba, when a scrap metal dealer unknowingly attempted to cut a military-grade grenade into smaller parts, triggering a fatal blast that claimed the life of one person and left three others injured.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, police explosives experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit responded swiftly to the scene.
He noted that the area was immediately secured, and the unexploded devices were professionally evacuated to the unit’s base headquarters for safe disposal.
The statement read in part, ” The area was immediately cordoned off, secured, and subsequently rendered safe.
“The remnant of one exploded grenade, and two (2) live (active) grenades were professionally and technically evacuated from the scene to the Base Headquarters of Police EOD-CBRN, Lagos, for safety.
“The cordon-off of the scene and the adjoining areas is emplaced to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and take immediate further necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
“Furthermore, the Command’s EOD-CBRN Unit has been working in collaboration with the Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) Squadron of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, to determine the origin of the explosive device and ensure all necessary actions are taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future,” it added.
