A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, appeared before a Shari’a court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, on Wednesday, accusing her husband, Usman Shuaibu, of neglect and inadequate provision, stating that he gives her only N50 per day for food.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the complainant, speaking through sign language interpreted by Aisha Sulaiman, accused her husband of starving her.
”He has failed in his responsibilities to provide for the house. He is a tailor.”
“When I delivered my baby, he couldn’t pay the hospital bill; it was his mother who provided the money,” she said.
She said their parents had intervened and urged her husband to take responsibility for his family’s needs, but he refused to change. She, therefore, asked the court to dissolve the marriage.
Shuaibu, however, denied Bello’s allegations.
The judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, directed the couple to appear with their parents or guardians on August 25.
