The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is making a passionate appeal to the governors of the South-East states to immortalize the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu by naming a significant monument after him in recognition of his indelible contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Professor Nwosu, who served as the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as the freest, fairest, and most credible election in Nigeria’s history. His visionary leadership, commitment to democratic ideals, and bold implementation of the Option A4 voting system laid the foundation for credible electoral processes in the country. Despite the unfortunate annulment of the election, his efforts remain a symbol of integrity and patriotism in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
As scholars and intellectuals from the South-East, we believe that it is imperative to celebrate and preserve the legacy of one of our own, who stood for justice, transparency, and democratic governance. Immortalizing Professor Nwosu will not only serve as an inspiration to future generations but will also reaffirm the commitment of the South-East region to upholding democratic values.
We, therefore, urge the South-East governors to consider renaming a key institution, road, or public infrastructure after Professor Humphrey Nwosu as a fitting tribute to his selfless service to the nation. His contributions must not be forgotten, and his name should be etched in history as a beacon of hope for free and fair elections in Nigeria.
We call on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, political leaders, and civil society organizations, to join in this call for recognition. It is time to give honor to whom it is due.
Signed:
