Former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s claim of reviving Nigeria’s economy as an insult to millions of Nigerians currently enduring hardship.
Wabara argued that if the President’s assertion were true, Nigerians would be testifying to the administration’s performance without needing persuasion.
He stated that the realities on the ground, including soaring inflation, widespread hunger, and deepening poverty, contradict the President’s claims.
“The reality on the ground does not support President Tinubu’s claims. If he had truly improved the economy, Nigerians would be the first to testify,” Wabara said.
According to him, “It’s ironic that Mr. President is talking about economic revival when the economy is clearly deteriorating under his watch. The indices say otherwise. Poor and hungry Nigerians do not need a lecture on economic revival. The first sign of improvement will be reflected in market prices.”
Wabara urged the President to use the remainder of his tenure to implement genuine economic reforms instead of making rhetorical statements. He advised a review of key economic policies, particularly those related to multiple taxation, which he said are stifling businesses and worsening the living conditions of citizens.
He also emphasised the urgent need to address the country’s worsening security situation, noting that insecurity has disrupted farming activities and contributed to food shortages. He attributed the displacement of farmers in many agrarian communities to attacks by bandits and criminal herders.
Wabara accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of mismanaging a once-thriving economy. He stated that during the PDP administration, Nigeria’s economy ranked among the top two in Africa, but that the APC has reversed those gains.
