Former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe has vowed never to back down on his support for the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.
The former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Monday found guilty of breaching money laundering Act and receiving over N200million cash from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).
Upon his conviction, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja therefore sentenced him to two years imprisonment with an option of N500,000 fine on each of the 26 count charges for which he was found guilty.
Justice Ojukwu ruled that Okupe, who was the first defendant in the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had up to 4.30pm of the same day to pay the fine option which amounted to N13million or be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Subsequently, SaharaReporters reported that Okupe beat the deadline and paid the fine, after which, he was allowed to go.
Okupe on his Twitter account shortly after paying the fine tweeted saying, “God is not man. The enemies have tried in so many ways but kept on failing. Victory is of God.”
Okupe, who was Peter Obi’s campaign council DG, resigned his position and on Thursday he tweeted again saying, “Dear Obidients, many are the afflictions of the righteous but God delivers him from them all. I have been wounded on the frontlines.
“By God’s Grace, I will heal quickly & resume at the rear guard. Our mission to Aso Rock in ’23 is irreversible & unstoppable, God being our helper. Merry Xmas ALL.”
