An unprecedented tragic incident happened in Ebenebe Community, Anambra State, in the mid-morning of Saturday, February 26, 2022.
Gunmen invaded a funeral ceremony in the sleepy community, about 30 minutes from the State Capital, Awka, and opened fire on everybody. By the time they left, 20 people lay dead in the pool of their blood. Several others were injured.
The casket containing the body of the man who they had gathered to bury, was pushed down and left wide open.
“This is an abomination, a sacrilege”, a man screamed as he watched the rivers of blood flowing in the dead man’s compound.
It is suspected that the incident is cult-related, and the gunmen, cultists.
The dead man, identified as Ozo, it is believed, is the leader of a cult group.
The attack, it is suspected, was carried out by a rival cult group.
It is not known if, and/or when the funeral of Ozo will be completed as the mourners who survived the massacre ran helter-skelter for their lives.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident.
