Asuspected diphtheria outbreak has claimed the lives of four children and left at least five others infected in Zaria, Kaduna State, sparking fresh public health concerns in the region.
Mallam Bashir Magaji Basharata, a resident of Kwarbai in Zaria City, revealed the heartbreaking loss of his daughter to the disease.
He disclosed that three of his other children are currently exhibiting symptoms consistent with diphtheria, including a swollen neck, difficulty breathing, and an inability to speak.
According to Basharata, his daughter was rushed to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Shika but tragically passed away despite efforts to save her.
He further stated that four additional children showing similar diphtheria-like symptoms have been admitted to the Kakaki Primary Health Care Clinic in a neighboring community.
Speaking in an interview on Monday with Daily Trust, Dr. Bello Jamoh, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board, confirmed that Kaduna State has been grappling with diphtheria outbreaks for the past 10 months.
“Although I wasn’t aware of this particular outbreak, I will liaise with the State Ministry of Health to dispatch a response team tomorrow for prompt action,” Dr. Jamoh assured.
Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. It can cause severe breathing difficulties, heart failure, paralysis, and even death if left untreated. Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure against the disease.
Health officials are urging residents in Kaduna State to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they or their children exhibit symptoms associated with diphtheria.
