The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is pleased to formally commend Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State for his proactive measures in addressing insecurity within the state. His leadership and commitment to the safety of Anambra citizens and residents are evident in the recent implementation of the Anambra Homeland Security Law, which emphasizes the protection of lives and properties.
We recognize that insecurity, including tragic incidents of kidnapping and violence, impacts all citizens, and we applaud the governor’s efforts to confront these complex challenges directly. Addressing the issue of unscrupulous practices in our communities, including manipulation by certain traditional and religious leaders, is essential for fostering a secure and harmonious environment.
While the governor’s actions may be met with diverse opinions, they reflect a genuine commitment to justice, equity, and transparency in ensuring public safety. We urge all stakeholders—government, civil society, and the public—to come together in support of these initiatives and collaborate for the betterment of our state.
FOSAD applauds the government’s ongoing initiatives to tackle insecurity within the state. Nevertheless, it is imperative to underscore that the determination of authenticity regarding practitioners such as native doctors, religious leaders, and other individuals identified as contributors to societal unrest should unequivocally rest with the judicial system. Public discourse, while essential for democratic engagement, should refrain from prematurely branding anyone as “fake” or “devilish.” Such terms can unjustly imply guilt and compromise individual rights, undermining the foundational principle of due process that lies at the heart of our legal system.
Moreover, we advocate for comprehensive profiling and thorough investigations that prioritize the protection of innocent citizens. It is crucial to ensure that individuals are not subjected to dehumanization and public scorn before the judiciary has had the opportunity to evaluate the evidence and render a fair judgment. This approach not only upholds the dignity of all individuals but also fosters a more just and equitable society.
Furthermore, it is vital to remain vigilant against the transformation of community security initiatives, such as the ‘Agunachemba’ security, into autonomous bodies that operate beyond the oversight of the State government—a scenario reminiscent of the rise of the “Bakassi Boys” in the past. History has shown that such groups can devolve into vigilante forces that may exacerbate the very issues they aim to resolve. Therefore, we call upon all stakeholders to advocate for a system that maintains accountability and integrity, ensuring that community safety efforts are closely monitored and aligned with the principles of justice and respect for human rights. Only through a balanced approach that honors the rule of law can we hope to build a truly secure and harmonious society.
In addition to applauding government efforts, to foster safer and more resilient communities, it is imperative to enhance community policing initiatives that prioritize engagement and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local populations. By promoting trust and transparency, we can cultivate a sense of collective responsibility in addressing crime. This requires not only the active involvement of citizens in reporting criminal activities but also the establishment of open dialogues where community members feel empowered to speak up without fear of retribution.
In addition to strengthening police-community relations, targeted awareness campaigns should be launched to inform citizens about their legal rights and equip them with the skills necessary to identify and report suspicious behaviors. Educational programs can serve as a vital resource, guiding individuals on how to navigate potential threats, including the risks associated with dubious traditional or religious practices that may exploit vulnerable members of society.
Furthermore, investing in youth empowerment programs is essential to creating alternatives to criminal behavior. Comprehensive training and skill development initiatives that foster positive engagement in community development can divert young people from paths leading to crime, enriching their lives and bolstering societal cohesion.
It is also critical to implement strict regulations governing traditional practices to prevent manipulation that might enable violent actions or exploitation. Collaboration with civil society organizations will be key in monitoring safety concerns, promoting moral values, gathering intelligence, and facilitating constructive dialogue among residents, further dissuading behaviors that can lead to criminal activity.
Additionally, the availability of mental health services must be enhanced to address the psychological factors that contribute to crime. Accessible mental health support can play a pivotal role in empowering individuals to seek help and fostering greater community wellbeing.
Equipping law enforcement agencies with the necessary training and resources is vital to effectively combat crime, particularly issues such as kidnapping and ritual killings. This must be done with a steadfast commitment to human rights standards to maintain the integrity and trustworthiness of the police force.
Finally, investing in modern technology—such as surveillance systems and advanced communication tools—will significantly enhance the efficacy of security operations across the region. By improving response times and operational capabilities, we can create a safer environment for all. These multifaceted approaches, grounded in evidence-based practices and community collaboration, will lead to more effective solutions in the ongoing battle against crime.
We urge all stakeholders to lend their support to these initiatives, recognizing that sustained efforts are necessary to promote a secure and equitable environment for everyone in Anambra State. Together, we can build a safer and more prosperous future.
Once again, we commend Governor Soludo for his steadfast leadership, and we look forward to positive, collaborative steps towards enhancing security for all citizens and residents of Anambra State.
