
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has organized a training, enlightenment and education event for electronic media practitioners on tax processes and operations.
The event which took place at the Nicon Luxury Hotel Abuja was attended by members of the Multimedia Publishers Association of Nigeria (MPAN).
Speaking at the program FIRS representative, Mr Chimenka Ezeribe, defined tax as a compulsory financial charge or levy imposed on a taxpayer by government to fund public spending.

He also enumerated the purposes of tax to include provision of rvenue for government, re-distribution of wealth, protection of local inductries. management of inflation etc.
Ezeribe stressed on the need to enforce tax laws and lamented that most Nigerians engage in tax evation and avoidance. Some of the relevant tax laws in Nigeria according to him include; Federal Inland Revenue Service establishment ACT 2007, Tax Administration (Self Assessment) Regulations 2011, Company Income Tax Act 2007, Personal Income Tax Act 2011, Value Added Tax Act 2007.

The mission and vision of the Federal Inland Revenue Service was also elaborately explained to the participants while training and enlightening them on misconceptions about FIRS, Tax appeal procedures, Tax payers’ rights and obligations, Self assessment regime and due dates, Taxes and levies administered by FIRS.
Certificates of Participation were presented to all the participants at the end of the program.
