Dr Abdulwaheed Omotosho, President, Charted Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON), has advised Nigerians against limiting themselves to only government job so as to boost their income.
Omotosho gave the advice while delivering a lecture during a skill acquisition programme, organised by the Criterion, Oyo State District, on Sunday in Ibadan.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Criterion is an association of Muslim Women in Business and Professions.
NAN also reports that the programme was entitled: “Spices Making for Income Generation and Healthy Feeding.”
Omotosho urged Nigerians to try as much as possible to be independent and set up their own businesses, no matter how small, and have bigger dreams.
According to him, job opportunities in Nigeria today are unlimited, adding that this would earn them more income and reduce their reliance on government job.
“You can venture into commodities like maize, beans, yam, cultivation and processing, trading and export of the commodities.
“Our solid minerals are high in potential; arts and crafts are also highly required within and outside the country.
“You can never lack if you have alternative sources of means of livelihood,” he said.
The CIECOBON president He that the Federal Government had provided an enabling environment for business to thrive, adding, however, that most people had limited information.
Omotosho noted that those who were supposed to spread the information were hoarding it, thus preventing people from knowing what they could do.
“The federal government is really assisting entrepreneurs, small, medium and large scale, by providing the necessary funds,” he said.
He said that it was certain that government job would not be enough to take care of the expenses of any individual.
Omotosho said that spices making, processing and adding value to products would earn people more income and could be exported into other countries, if well packaged.
According to him, Nigerians don’t need to leave the country in search of greener pasture if the resources in the country could be converted into opportunities.
He called on Nigerians and participants at the programme to search for knowledge and move closer to those who could guide them in taping into alternative job opportunities.
Earlier, the Oyo State Ameerah of the organisation, Prof. Morufat Balogun, said that the theme of the workshop was conceived to address the health and livelihood needs of Nigerians.
Balogun said that the workshop would help the participants to explore diverse expertise and new partnerships.
She said that the workshop would also assist the participants to establish small and medium scale businesses through which they could be generating incomes with little capital.
NAN reports that the more than 35 participants at the programme were also taken through the practical aspect of spices production. (NAN)
