Convener of Indigenous People of Nigeria (IPN), Mazi Dickson Iroegbu has declared total support for the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi whom he described as the most qualified intellectually, politically, healthwise, clarity of the mind etc.

Iroegbu was speaking during activities marking June 12 democracy day. While paying respect to Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the presidential election in 1993, he also reminded Nigerians that Prof Humphrey Nwosu who conducted the June 12 election, adjudged to be free, fair and credible by the international community, deserves accolades.

He said;

“It was INEC known as NEC that conducted that free and fair election on June 12, 1993 headed by Prof Humphrey Nwosu. Most times while celebrating June 12, we forget the umpire who ensured that there was a transparent, credible and fair contest that gave Chief MKO Abiola the mandate. By every means, MKO Abiola made a great sacrifice for democracy, and so we celebrate him. However, we also celebrate the hero of the process, the watchman of the process, Prof Humphrey Nwosu. As the 2023 elections unfold and political parties have thrown up their flagbearers, we the Indigenous People of Nigeria believe that the pursuit of justice, equity and fairness for all Nigerians is a marathon and we intend to finish strong. We will push this narative because it is the right thing for us as a nation to do. We throw our weight behind the former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi.”

It will be recalled that the June 12, 1993 general elections was won by Chief MKO Abiola but was annuled by the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida. Abiola died in detention will trying to reclaim his mandate in 1998.
